I cannot stress the importance of diet and nutrition when trying to build muscle mass. In the mainstream media and widely available books on weight training there is very little mention of what to eat except the common mention of protein, which we all know our muscles need to grow. Unfortunately protein is only a small part of the dietary puzzle when trying to increase muscle size so in this article I will explain exactly what you must eat to feed your muscles and promote growth.
The human body takes in calories in 3 forms from protein, fats and carbohydrates. Protein synthesis is the process that must take place if your muscles are to grow and get bigger, and for this to occur you must eat the right ratios of proteins, fats and carbohydrates else you will soon begin to notice you aren't growing at all.
Protein is necessary to prevent muscle breakdown and to feed your muscles with the building blocks to growth. Fats are needed to raise testosterone levels and provide the many micronutrients and functions in order to place your body in to a position where muscle growth is favourable. Carbohydrates while frowned upon in society today are crucial to bodybuilding success because they provide us with energy to fuel our workouts and fill our muscles with glycogen so they look fuller and any nutrients that we take in through our food can be utilized by the muscles.
The recommendation is to eat a ratio of 40/40/20 ¨C this is 40 calories from protein, 40 from carbohydrates and 20 from fats. This is where it begins to get complicated, as all calories are not created equal. There are 4 calories to 1 gram of protein, 4 calories to 1 gram of carbohydrates and 9 calories to every gram of fat. This means to work out what you should eat you need to do the proper calculations.
